Who can apply

Citizens of all countries and territories with a valid passport can apply for a Vietnam e-visa 2. The e-visa can be valid for up to 90 days 2.

Some travellers do not need a visa for short trips. The UK Foreign Office says British visitors can enter visa-free for up to 45 days for tourism or business, and can use an e-visa for a 90-day, multiple-entry stay 3. Check the rule for your own passport before you apply 3.

Cost

The e-visa fee is US$25 for a single entry and US$50 for multiple entries 2. You pay through the portal's e-payment gateway, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused 2.

Border gates

E-visa holders must enter and leave Vietnam through international border gates designated by the government 2. The UK Foreign Office says the e-visa restricts you to the entry and exit points you select when applying 3.

If you get an e-visa when you are already in Vietnam, you must leave and enter again to start using it 3.

  • Land border gates on the government list include Bo Y, Cha Lo, Cau Treo, Huu Nghi, Ha Tien, Lao Bao, Lao Cai, La Lay, Moc Bai, Mong Cai and Nam Can 2.
  • Pick your gates carefully, as the e-visa ties you to the points you select 3.

When to apply

Apply before you travel through the official portal 1. The official pages we checked do not give a set processing time, so leave enough time before your flight 1,2. If you want to stay longer than 90 days, contact the Vietnam Immigration Department 3.

Validity and overstays

An e-visa covers the dates and entry type you apply for, up to 90 days 2,3. If you overstay or work without permission, the authorities can stop you leaving until you pay a fine, and you could be deported 3.

Check the web address

The Vietnam Immigration Department says its electronic visa portal moved on 11 November 2024 to https://thithucdientu.gov.vn and https://evisa.gov.vn 1. Apply only on those two addresses 1. The government fee is US$25 or US$50, so a site charging more is adding its own fee 2.
