Foreigners of Pakistani origin or holding a Pakistani passport are not eligible and must apply at an Indian mission 1. People with a defence, military, security or police background are told to apply for a regular visa instead 1.

When to apply
For e-Tourist and e-Business visas, apply online at least 4 days before your arrival date 1. The fee must be paid at least 4 days before travel or the application will not be processed 1. e-Medical applicants can choose an arrival date up to 120 days ahead 1.
The approved Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is emailed to you. Print it and show it at the immigration check post, where the e-Visa is stamped in your passport 1.
Payment and refunds
Card payments carry a bank charge of up to 3% plus taxes, and PayPal 4% 1. The fee is non-refundable whether the ETA is granted or refused 1. If your card is charged twice for one application, the extra charge is refunded after reconciliation 1.
e-Arrival card
Foreigners can complete India's e-Arrival card online within 72 hours before arrival at boi.gov.in, indianvisaonline.gov.in or the Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. It is arrival information, not a visa 1. The UK Foreign Office says foreign nationals must complete it before reaching immigration 3.
No express fees
The Government of India says it makes no provision for charging any emergency or additional fee for an emergency or express e-Visa 1. A site offering a faster e-Visa for more money is not the government service. Pay only on https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/ 1.
